Tonight, indie rockers Sunflower Bean will hit the Ché Café stage for the latest stop on their tour supporting recent album Twentytwo In Blue.
The Brooklyn band – who combine poignant, atmospheric indie melodies with psychedelic pop textures – formed in 2013 and cut their teeth in the DIY scene before garnering acclaim with their debut, 2016’s Human Ceremony. That album featured more polished pop tendencies than their earlier, heavy psychedelic stylings – while still retaining a fuzzy, rough-around-the-edges vibe.
But on Twentytwo In Blue – released in March on Mom + Pop – their songwriting has fully formed. Featuring sleek, lush guitar soundscapes and a show-stopping vocal performance from Julia Cummings, the album has catapulted Sunflower Bean to the higher echelons of modern rock. The hypnotic, downtempo “I Was A Fool” is soaked in nostalgic vibes, while “Twentytwo” features layered melodies and searing lyrics full of romantic longing. There’s also the minimal, bittersweet love/breakup song “Any Way You Like,” as well as the propulsive, defiant lo-fi garage punk track “Human For.” It’s a sonically diverse album full of poignant emotion. Recently, Twentytwo In Blue landed on Paste Magazine’s list of the best albums of the year so far.
While Sunflower Bean have fully capitalized on their buzz and ascended to green musical pastures, there’s still the sense that they frequently give back to the DIY scene that helped launched them. Which is why their performance tonight at the Ché just feels so right. The legendary hole-in-the-wall venue has had it’s bumps in the road latey, but they’ve rebuilt (literally) thanks to the dedicated young members that make up the collective. They have a full roster of shows coming up, and having Sunflower Bean perform feels like a cherry on top of it all. There’s still a few tickets left, but they’re definitely going to sell out. Get them HERE, and enjoy the show! And watch the music video for “Twentytwo” below.
