Mass Gothic is a New York band that dabbles in a wide range of dark, melodic and heartfelt goth music. Because the “goth” genre encompasses so many different styles, Mass Gothic creates diverse tunes that fall on the spectrum from noisy, dissonant sludge to catchy dark wave. And today, the husband/wife duo of Noel Heroux and Jessica Zambri released the third single off their upcoming sophomore album I’ve Tortured You Long Enough, due out on August 31 via Sub Pop. It’s their follow-up to 2016’s excellent self-titled debut.
“How I Love You” is an incredibly personal and poignant guitar-driven love song that places Zambri’s gorgeous voice front-and-center. Opening on a sparse guitar riff and slowly expanding to include jangly percussion and swirling synths, the track vividly highlights their romance as a married couple. Zambri delivers a lush vocal performance as she serenades Heroux over snowballing instrumentation: “You wave goodbye just to be safe/ I count the ways that I love you/ I love you/ I watched you go out my window/ And count the ways that I love you/ I love you.” Midway through, a rousing, feedback-infused guitar solo kicks the track to stratospheric heights. When Heroux’s voice joins in to harmonize with Zambri’s, it almost feels like we’re watching in on an intimate conversation between the two. Overall, it’s a stunning, dreamy goth-pop ballad that hits you hard with the feels.
Along with their previous two singles – the propulsive lead track “Dark Window” and the rhythmic post-punker “J.Z.O.K.” – Mass Gothic seem primed for a big breakthrough with I’ve Tortured You Long Enough.
