San Diego’s most prolific hip-hop artist of all time, Rob $tone, dropped a hot new single this past week, the catchy and vibrantly moody “Too Faded.” This one arrives hot on the heels of the Lemon Grove rapper’s surprise-released album from early summer called Young Rob $Tone. That set featured a fresh assortment of heady, diverse rap bangers, including the psychedelic and sinister-sounding “Ion Sleep,” which featured on our June Barn Playlist. Now he’s dropped “Too Faded,” a bouncy and anthemic track he’s been hyping for months and which features a stellar verse from Bay Area underground veteran P-Lo.
Opening on ominous piano notes punctuated with pulsating hi-hats, $tone brings a dark party atmosphere to the song, with his melodic, boisterous flows absolutely floating over the trippy, uptempo beats. “I can’t hear what you say/ Can’t give a fuck what you think/ I’m way too faded,” he admits – like a badge of honor – giving the track his personal stamp as an ode to debauchery. Meanwhile, P-Lo serves as a perfect collaborator and foil, his hyphy drawl providing the visceral yin to $tone’s cerebral yang. Overall, “Too Faded” packs an ultra-catchy chorus, lush production, and intoxicating, uncaged vibes. It’s destined to be Rob $tone’s next big hit following his smash chart-topping breakthrough “Chill Bill.”
In it’s musical history, San Diego has become known as a punk town. But now it’s a town with a growing hip-hop culture to boot, and you can see that sense of unleashed, devil-may-care bravado rub itself into the Lemon Grove scene. It’s an especially exciting time for the scene too, with $tone’s 1207 crew readying the release of their debut collaborative album Grovetown Records Vol. 1. When that record drops this Friday, we’ll be sure to bring you full coverage. In the meantime, listen to “Too Faded” below via Soundcloud.
