Drowsy is a new band from Los Angeles that conjures lush, haunting shoegaze sounds. Formerly known as The Baltic and originally hailing from Denver, the four-piece band consisting of guitarists Ari Kononov, Adam Dankowski and Josh Kaplan and drummer Graham Epstein relocated to LA last year and have since evolved their sound under the new moniker Drowsy. Ultimately, that yielded their beautiful debut single, a winding and towering track called “Lapsing” released back in October.
The song hinges on soaring lo-fi breakdowns, with a dramatic slide guitar elevating the post-rock-tinged soundscapes to stratospheric heights. Soothing, whispery vocals and wonderfully dense melodies capture a sense of melancholy, regret, and longing – before the guitars clash and snowball into a series of loud crescendos. Overall, the song is a short and sweet blast of crunching guitar noise that ebbs and flows along with all sorts of bittersweet emotions.
Drowsy are here to stay and we can’t wait to hear more from this promising young band. We’ll be sure to update you with more tracks and upcoming shows from them, but in the meantime, listen to the searing “Lapsing” below via Bandcamp.
